Chair of the Senate Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee writes DOD and DHA concerning fiscal mismanagement.
Chair of the Senate Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and DHA Director Army Lieutenant General Telita Crosland requesting information about the Defense Health Agency’s fiscal management. The subcommittee recently heard testimony from auditors regarding the agency’s financial practices.
Senator Warren stated, “I sent a letter to DoD and the DHA asking both agencies to improve oversight and transparency around current TRICARE spending, and put new rules in place to prevent price gouging of our military families in the future.”
She continued, “The Defense Health Agency provides the reimbursements for medical procedures, services, supplies — whatever is purchased. TRICARE is allowing rampant price gouging by health care providers, driving up costs for beneficiaries and ripping off taxpayers.”
In her letter, Senator Warren’s letter said, “The failure to protect taxpayer funds is unacceptable, particularly given recently imposed Congressional spending caps.”
Director of Defense Capabilities and Management in the Government Accountability Office, Elizabeth Fields, said that defense agencies achieve significant savings when they institute a review process for contracts.
